Hey all, I have a 1994 F150 2WD with a factory 5.0 Mass air with a 4r70w. I am switching to a manual transmission (personal preference). I can not seem to locate a mass air 5 speed computer from a truck. However I cant take 2 steps without kicking a mustang 5speed mas air computer. Will one of these computers work? Like I said, the truck has mass air NOT speed density. Are the connectors the same? Is the mustang mass air wiring the same as the truck mass air wiring? Thanks all in advance.
If you have a mass air truck now with an auto, and only plan on changing to a manual transmission, you don't need to change the computer. You can use the computer you have.
Your check engine / MIL light will not light because the automatic is missing, however anytime you download codes from the computer, it of course will list the various transmission codes indicating catastrophic failure. Which makes sense since it's not there anymore.
The automatic mass air truck computers also have a nicer timing curve than the manual ones (typically), so swap in the manual and don't worry about the electronics.
You absolutely MUST wire up a neutral switch or the automatic computer will think you're always in neutral, and not adjust the timing curve correctly when the engine experiences a load - i.e. accelerating the truck.
Check out the wiring diagrams found at http://fordfuelinjection.com and compare the two. That's all I know to do when talking about wiring compatibility. You can move pins to match the computer in the connector and the connector will fit the mustang computer. Depending on how the truck is wired, a 94 or 95 5.0 mustang computer might not require any re-wiring, but without looking at the wiring diagrams I don't know for sure.
Wow, thanks for the info. Frederic in regards to the neutral switch. You mean a neutral safety switch right? And EPNCSU2006, Thanks for the link! I will peruse it today!
