I have a ramsey winch and I was trying to figure out if it would be better to get a winch bumper or some kind or winch mount that would go on a grill/brush guard. any suggestions?
There's nothing behind the grille that's structurally useful, so unless you plan on doing some serious welding to make your own supports for the winch, expect the plastic and sheet metal of the nose of your truck to yank right off when winching.
This is why they are often mounted behind the front bumper - close proximity to the frame rails to which it can be tied into for strength.
You can buy (or make) a winch bumper of course, or you can purchase a winch roller, mount it on the front of your bumper, boring the necessary slot behind the rollers and mounting you winch behind the factory bumper. A winch roller looks like this:
A friend of mine has a land rover, which he mounted a Ramsey winch behind the bumper, but instead of putting the rollers on the front of the bumper, he mounted it inside a simple welded box (which he made), and mounted that in the center of the bumper with a door in front of it, so when the door is closed, you don't see the winch or the rollers. Open the door (like a fuel tank filler door type thing if that helps you picture it bette), and there's the hook. Yank hook and line out, and winch.
