The third problem that the dealer tried to fix was my rear axle whining when coasting at low speed. Unfortunately after replacing the pinion and side bearings and settiny the lash and pinion depth there is still a noticeable whine. This is the second attempt they have made in trying to repair this problem without success
Tell 'em to replace the whole assembly. The tech doing the install and adjustments may not be the best at it. It would also be in the dealership's best interest to trash the whole axle than waste the man hours in the rebuilds.
Yep, just had mine done 2 weeks ago. It went in 3 times before they were able to fix it. At first, they rebuilt the front diff. Sound actually went away for 2 days after they did it. Came back so I went back. Next they took the vehicle for a test drive with something called "chassis ears"? Found the sound, ordered a new diff and had me come back when the parts came in. So now I have a rebuilt front and entirely new rear. Not bad. too bad they didn't fix it right the first time.
The biggest problem you are gonna have is finding a dealer with a good Axle Tech. Don't even bother if all they have are rookies, and believe me, you HAVE TO ASK!!. 2 dealers in my area flat out told me to go elsewhere if I wanted my gears done right. I think they told me..." We are hit and miss with rear ends, but mostly miss, but we will be glad to try for you"!! I have rebuilt a few R&P's in older trucks but heck those weren't very quiet and driven at 80mph for 4-500 miles at a shot either. I'll bet it's tricky getting them to mesh so you hear nothing in a quiet vehicle. BTW, just had my 05 EB done under warranty, The tech had to take it apart twice to re-shim but it's silent now....I mean for now.
My 04 expy had rearend done twice. 3000 miles and at 18000 miles. Replaced ring and pinion both times. Quiet again hopefully for good. Next time I will ask for a complete rearend if it comes back.
Well they concluded it wasn't making any noise and I must be hearing things. I took it away and have driven it today and there is no doubt that the noise is there. They claimed to also have put on a lift and listened with Chassis Ears and could not find anything. Possibly it is coming from some other source. The noise is a definate whine which is present when I take my foot off the throttle at about 35 - 40 mph and let the truck coast. This is a typical driving condition on the backroads where I live in MA so it is quite noticeable.
I was advised in a PM that the noise is impossible to cure in an early build 03 model like mine so I will probably have to live with it.
Hope they have this sorted for the 2007 model which I will definately not buy in the first year of production
