PInch Joint??
I have recently had a chattering noise coming from the drivetrain of my 2001 Explorer 4x4. After taking it to a driveline shop they mentioned it may be a bad pinch joint(joint that connects the front drive line to the transfer case). I have never heard of this type joint and the local Autozone does not carry it. It is obviosly not a U-Joint. Can anyone give me some info on replacing this joint and where I might find one.
p.s. The explorer is a full time 4x4 from what I understand. Is this a normal option on these explorers?

All wheel drive (AWD) is a common option on the V8 explorers. If you have 4wd, there will be a selector that says 4WD Auto and 4WD HI and 4WD Lo. As to the pinch joint, I'm sorry but I'm no help. I've always had 4wd's.

Thanks for the reply Jerry. My Explorer has a 4.0 liter but from your description it is definitely an AWD. I am going to replace the pinch joint today so hopefully it gets rid of the chattering noise I've been getting.

After talking to the driveline shop, I found that I was mistaken concerning the part name. It is called a plunge joint and not a pinch joint. Anyhow, it is in the process of getting replaced as well as a new spicer(greasable) front U joint.
