It's crazy what some people will do to make money. Just a few weeks ago, two young guys (one around 20 years old, the other around 30) got burned up in an old store building right down the road here. They broke into the store, went to the basement to steal copper pipe, they were cold and started a fire to keep warm, the fire got out of control and they somehow got trapped. Burned them to death. It's not worth it.
I only recycle aluminum, just because it makes sense to not waste the resource, plus it saves lots of electricity to make aluminum from scrap vs ore. I'd recycle glass too but no one here takes glass. Paper to me is a waste of time because it grows on trees and is infinitely available.
Here in oregon we have a $0.05 deposit on cans and you can return them for the nickel. Somehow I still just throw mine away, too much trouble to save them up and then take 'em back to the store. Besides you get all messy and it's not worth the time spent to get such little money back. I could even throw them in my weekly recycling bin if I felt like it, but call me lazy, even that is too much of a hassle.
I either wind up giving them to Scouts (cheap, easy fundraiser) or splitting the dough with the kids when we take them back to the store.
I recycle my Dad's beer cans at $.75 per pound. At that price I like to make sure there are no ants in the cans weighting them down so I hose off the cans with plenty of water to make sure they are clean. Don't you think that's a good idea? Clever of me isn't it?
I try to save all our cans, but my wife beats me to it sometimes. She chucks them, and takes the garbage out. I ain't goin' in the dumpster to get them back. I usually wait until I got about 30 bucks worth and buy a case of beer and a pack of smokes.
And it's not just pop and beer cans. There's pop bottles, and beer bottles too.
There was a guy in Vancouver who, years ago, collected enough cans, and saved enough money, to build his own hotel. It was called the "Blue Boy Hotel". Not called that anymore though.
That reminds me; I have to get back to that Draper book.
Of course I'm an honest crook and don't you forget it!
I love Draper's book. He really hits me where I live. It keeps me motivated. I just talked with Dave and his wife, Laree, earlier today. Real nice people!

LOL! Here's my vote for the Darwin Award of the Year. They qualify for that one...
I always take mine back for recycling. $0.04 for cans, $0.08 for bigger cans/bottles. That adds up quickly but just about pays for the gas to get there in my truck :-(
