my lifters are pinging and the motor as far as i know has not been messed with. i am wanting to tighten and adjust my lifters and cant find what to adjust them to.
I've never heard of lifters "pinging". If you mean that they are making a tapping noise then you either have an oil pressure problem, bad lifter(s) or a bad cam. The 351M/400 does not have an adjustable valvetrain. The rockers are held in by a 5/16" bolt that is "set it & forget it". If the motor hasn't been messed with and you have noises coming from the valvetrain then you have a problem and there simply isn't any adjustment that will fix it.
pinging is also refered to as "spark knock" or "detonation" and occurs in the combustion chamber. the sound is made from the irregular burning of the air/fuel mixture, it's like an explosion echo. it almost sounds like metallic noise but it's not. some people call detonation "lifter rattle" but the two are very different.
try some premium fuel when the tank is almost empty and see if the pinging isn't gone or at least lessened. also verify that you have good oil pressure, without oil pressure the lifters will be collapsed and will make noise.
thank you very much. i did not know they were not adjustable. it is probally the cam and or the oil pump. some times my pressure is low but not in the dangerously low catagory. i plan on rebuilding my other motor i just need this one to last till then.
If installing a performance cam, then install the 2 spring per valve or 3 spring per valve.
With a new cam always install new lifters and lube the new cam and lifter prior to installation with cam lube oil. Follow installation and break in procedure with new cam.
You don't necessarily need to rebuild your heads to install a new cam. New lifters and even springs can be replaced with the heads on the engine. Short term it shouldn't be a problem.
