Hi everyone, this is my first time here. I have an issue with a 460 FI in a 92 F250. This engine ran like a top for 250K. We overhauled it at that point and installed a new oil pump (stock). At about 20K it blew the oil filter off the engine (relief valve in pump stuck). Replaced the oil pump again and ran it another 5K, then decided to put a second oil pressure gage on as the stock cluster gage seemed a little funky. Wow - 80 psi at idle. Now seems as if maybe relief valve is acting up again. Is this a common problem with this engine ?? Is there a better pump than the stock ford unit? I am not all that fond of replacing oil pumps.... thanks in advance. BF
not a problem I have heard of bieng common, you could go with a melling pump it's what I have used for years either HV or standard or instead of replacing your pump go and take it apart and polish the relief valve with some emery cloth as it's just a slug of steel behind a spring and something is not smooth or there is too much interference that is causing it to stick.
MIne carries 75 psi at idle cold and 65 when hot. Mine is a melling pump. And Monster baby is correct you can polish the slug if it feels tight in the relief bore.
Thanks guys. Anyone know what normal pressure is for a stock pump? Main problem is having to pull the engine to get at the pump because there isn't enough room to drop the pan. What a pain... cw
The normal opperating pressure is 40 to 88 pounds of pressure at 2000 RPM normal opperating temp.I just read this straight out of my book.So if you have 80 pounds then concider yourself lucky.
