Hi everyone
I got a 87 ranger 2.3 5 speed that has a problem with the speedometer. The problem is i have no speedometer and i want to see what gas mileage im getting in this high priced world of ours. Anyway i started with no speedometer, so i pulled the cable out of tranny with gear still attatched to it, spun it and speedometer worked telling me that problem lies within the tranny. I should also say that i replaced the gear thats connected to the cable and it still didnt work. Is there anything else i can do to try and fix this, or how hard is it to get into the tranny and see what the gear inside looks like. Soemthing i should try or not??
Thanks
Curtis
I put it in the clutch, transmission forum and i got one response saying that he would try to replace the gear on the cable again, because the gear inside the tranny is never suppose to go out. Ill put this topic in the ranger forum tonight and see what they have to say. The gear on the cable was new when i bought the truck, and they guy said it wasnt working the best but it was working....well it wasnt long before it just died, and i havent worked on it since (2 yrs). Anyway im wondering if there is maybe a special trick to setting this gear back into the tranny or if im messing somehting up just sliding it in.
Older vehicles often use different colored gears to indicate the # of teeth which affects speedometer calibration. You said the speedometer worked when you got it but it died......what do the teeth on the presumably plastic/nylon gear look like? Shredded by chance?
No they arnt shredded rather just a little worn in the middle of the gear, and not much at that. You really have to look at it to notice that its worn a little, but im not convinced that a little wear would take out the speedometer completely. When i said the speedometer worked, it worked spiratically. Meaning that it would jump around not reading anything close to what speed i was going. That got me thinking that it was the cable, but as i said earlier it worked when i twisted the gear attatched to the cable.
