It should be pretty straight forward. The one I installed (different brand) had a positive, ground, backlight, and pickup wires. The pickup wire just goes to the ignition coil under the hood. On my 88 its a purple wire with a white stripe. Be sure to hook up to the positve on the coil, not the ground. When the coil is energized to generate a spark, it tells the tach. The tach calculates how often the coil is energized for a given number of cylinders and then gives you the RPM reading.
I wired my positive power to the power window supply so that it only came on when the ignition was on. Then I wired my backlight lead to the dash lights, so it only comes on when the headlights are on. This also allows you to dim it with the rest of the dash.
