IMO, ford does need new V8's as the current 4.6 and 5.4 just don't cut it. And my truck has a 5.4. IMO, I would like a 5.4 that was a little more powerful, I'd be willing to give up some low end for it, cause my truck can get a load moving no problem, but at spee, it needs more HP.
As to the 4.6 Vs. pushrod 5.0 thing, IMO the 2V 4.6 is trash compared to the 5.0 HO, the 3 valve and 4 valve versions are better, but the 4.6 2V feels very weak.
Fords, IMO have always been work trucks, so they never really worried about speed. I always tell people if they want a fast Ford, buy a lightning. I think the 4.6L 2v is a great engine. It doesn't have the torque the 302 has, but it has better rpm range, and is much more fun to drive.
The 302's I've had, I had to watch the temperature guage in long runs. Also, even though the motor didn't go out, I had to replace parts all the time. Water pumps, alternators, this that and the other. Again, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and this is what I base mine on.
How many of the new mustangs have you driven? The two I've been in are absolutley awesome. Much better than any Mustang with a HO 302. Most guys had a hard time letting go of the 302. I did for a while, but after 97, the 4.6L has been a good motor, they run a long time, with very little maintanance.
Well people never seem to have enough power anymore. They all want to go 90 MPH. When Im on the road I go the speed limit an everybody passes me. These engines all have enough power for anybodies needs. You know trucks were never supposd to be as fast as cars. Trucks are made to haul loads an low end torque is critical. Engines with out low end torque are worthless in my opinion. If youwant fastget a Mustang. Sorry youcant have your cake an eat it too. To get more you sacrifice mileage an with gas prices we dont need that.
Not necessarily, Torque will get you moving, HP will keep you moving once your on your way. When towing a heavy load, being able to keep it at a constant speed requires HP. Thats where the 5.4 is lacking. Diesels are great-they give you your cake and you can eat it nowadays. Nothing like a fast truck that can haul anything and still get close to 20mpg. In comparison, I'd say the 2V 4.6 is definitely a weak motor compared to those of Dodge and GM-with GM's 4.8 being the best. Throw the 3V heads on the 4.6 and it may be a different story.

Ya and for those of you that know anything about EFI Live, they just came out with that for the durmax, it was previously known to only performance Vette owners. Basically there is a guy that has made his own economy tune, and has claimed over 23 mpg. It has yet to be proven, but God bless the day that a 7000 pound truck can get 23mpg and you can crank it up to get over 500rwhp and move a house.
That would be great if the factories in Cleveland could land the work for that 4.4 liter CGI (compacted graphite iron) blocks that Ford developed for the Land Rover. Having a small V8 like that that is a diesel would be really beneficial for Ford, as well as beneficial for the workers in Cleveland.
I didn't know that the bearing end caps were CGI. Pretty cool stuff.
I find the 4.6 2v in my 2005 scab more than enough motor for the truck! it will smoke the tires if i punch it and it is nice and quiet if i dont, but if i was gonna mod the motor i would put the 3v heads with a super charger(he-he-ha-ha) just my 2 cents!!

Did you drive the 4.7 from Dodge and the 4.8 from Chevy before your truck? As the base V8, these two have a lot more grunt all around when compared to the Ford. You're right though, Ford needs to finally slap the 3V heads on the 4.6 truck motor already. I think they are holding back due to the HP output it will produce (it will be too close to the 300HP that the 5.4 motor produces).
yup my father in law has two dodges with the 4.7's in them, they do feel a little peppier from a stop, but do you think it is just from ford haveing the electric throttle? maybe/maybe not. well thanks again for the feed back!
