Hey everyone
A buddy of mine has a 7.3 diesel 1997.His oil cooler(header) is leaking.I was wondering if this is a hard job to change out.We are not sure if it is the cooler itself or the o-rings that seal it at the ends.
If some one has a diagram for this header or any advise on how to do this would be great. But a diagram would help alot too.
Thanks for the help...
Just did mine (1995). It was leaking oil outboard REALLY bad. It's not too bad of a job but really messy. You do have to drain the coolant but not the oil. On my 95 I was able to get to the front bolts by removing the left front wheel and the SMALL section of the inner fender liner. A swivel socket makes it pretty easy to get in there on the bolts. The rear bolts were easy. Getting your hand up in there to clean the side of the block (on the front end) before reinsallation is kinda hard. Not much room to work. The o-rings in mine were so brittle you could just snap them into pieces. Also, the price on the o-rings and gaskets was a lot higher than I would have thought. The 4 o-rings and 2 gaskets were about $70 to $80. They were only available at the dealership. Also, pressing the assembly back together after the new o-rings are installed is pretty tuff. It's a tight fit. I had to improvise since I don't have a shop press. Used a 2x4 under the rear of the truck to pry down on the assembly until it kinda "popped" together. Grease her up a little and it will go. Warning, do not do this job on any surface that you do not want covered with used motor oil. It's amazing how much residual oil is left in that cooler.
