I went offroading the other day, and really screwed up my truck. i got water under the distributer, and did something to the alternator, so I'm only getting 11 volts instead of 14. But the worst part is I broke the seal on my powerstearing gearbox, near the pitman arm I guess. So i'm pulling it off.
My question is, is it possible to fix the seal, or do I have to go to a junkyard and pull the gearbox out of another ford?
By the way, I fixed the distributer with a hair dryer, but the alternater is still f'ed up. I've got to pull it to and take it to napa and have them test it. I hope that i just fried the plug or something simple like that.
Any auto parts store will have a seal kit for your steering box. There not too bad to tear apart and rebuild. Just be careful that you don't lose all the little ball bearings when you pull it apart!

I love the fact that parts stores have lifetime warranties on alternators (and other things) now days. For some reason I can't get more than 3 years out of my alternatory.
The one thing that does suck about the warranty is that if it is charging at 11 volts or just works intermittently, when they test the alternator, if it doesn't completely fail then you don't get a replacement. I just cut the wires to the brushes and I get a new one...sucks to be stranded somewhere because they didn't give a new one.
Hey, I took the alternator to napa, and they gave me a new one. And I got my gearbox pulled with no trouble. had to borrow some tools from les schwab(friends dad works there). Actually, I went to napa to buy a pitman arm puller, and I didn't know what one looked like, and the guy there tried to sell me a pickle fork. But when i went to les schwab, the guy told me that if I had used a pickel fork, I would have f'ed everything up. So good thing I didn't
I called a junk yard, and they had a gearbox for me on the shelf for 45$, so I just bought it and put it in, now my truck works again.
By the way, does anyone know where I can find a front skid plate/splash guard for my truck, to keep water from shooting up into my engine compartment and ruining my alternator and distributor again. If I can't find one, I can have my friend custom weld one, but I'd rather buy one.
