E4OD transmision problem???

I have a 1990 F-250 7.3 Diesel and i was wondering if i need a transmission rebuild? The problem is when I first drive my truck in the morning (engine & trans cold) the transmission torque converter wont lock up until you get about 4 miles up the road at 60 mph. I checked the fluid but it is ok. It did not do this until this winter. Is it the cold weather?? I live in North Carolina.

Don't know for your year, but many of the computer controlled trannys, like my 94 F250 E4OD will keep the converter unlocked until things warm up a bit. It usually takes several miles at freeway speed to warm up.

The RPM on upshift is about 500 higher when cold. Then it drops down to normal when warmed up.

I would guess yours is working like it should unless it shifts 1000 RPM(or so) higher than usual.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

My '95 351w E4OD truck has always done this. Funny I don't remember my '91 300 E4OD doing it. But the transition from unlocked to locked is almost always the same distance within a few hundred feet down the road (a mile or so) so I have always just chalked it up to computer control, especially since when it locks up the transition is definite, and I have never had TCC lockup shudder.
