i dont titration eather. you make a few small test batch's if it looks good then make you big batch, you can be off. it will most liky still come out ok, just keep tweeking it to you get your best looking batch. i start at 5.5 or 6 grams lye pere liter off oil and mix 20% menthaol (i think i have not check my list in a while but thats sound about right)
why dont you do titrations fabman? what do you do instead? or do you just skip the step n play it by ear or sight in this case?
I gave up on titration 2years ago. I have a formula that I use that I developed for the Oil that I haul. I found from reading alot of Gov studys that If you use a little more than what is called for in titration that it will "push" the reaction forword to compleation. I had to change my "formula" just a little when I changed from NaOH to KOH, but other than that I don't titrate at all.
From what I have observed from other people's work I've found that most people use exactly what is called for, and without any extra KOH if there is even the least little bit of water in the oil they will get an incomplete reaction. This is also why I don't use an "appleseed" style processer. With my open style processer I can see what is happining and can add a little more KOH if I see an incomplete reaction. This way I can add more KOH [1/4 pound at a time] to force the reaction to completion.
