My recently purchased 1979 F150 has an engine that is full of that sludge from sitting for many years. I need to know if I can drop the oil pan without pulling the engine? Is there enough clearence? My project is a 1979 F150 4x4 with a 351M and a 6c trans. Can I drop it? Has anyone cleaned this sludge out of their engine before? Whats the easiest way? Thanks
-Will
yea ive had my pan off on my 429 in my f-250 its 2wd but all i did was loosen my motor mounts jacked it up a few inches and pulled it free and you should be able to flush out your motor
On my 77 (400, c6) I was able to jack it up and support under the frame with jackstands. Doing so allowed the front differential to hang at full droop. This gave me plenty of room to get the oil pan out, even with the dipstick tube attached still.
As far as cleaning out the sludge, if you really wanted to get ALL of it out, remove the oil pan and clean it out- spic and span. Then re-install, add fresh oil and new filter. You can get from the local auto parts store some cleaner that you add to the oil, run till the engine is at full operating temp, then with oil still hot, change the oil and filter again. This should get it cleaned out enough to make anyone happy.
The only time I have ever removed a pan just to clean, was a car that had gone countless miles without getting an oil change, and when I removed the drain plug, globs of thick mess came out. Had a hard time convincing the customer to go for it, until I showed them what came out of the oil pan...
Easy as pie. I have a '77 that I dropped the oil pan on. Take it down fer enough to get the oil pump off and let it fall in to the pan itself and the whole shebang will come right down. Lesson learned from me...do it on a flat hard surface. First time was in the dirt on a slight incline. Here in New Mexico we have these little thorns that come off weeds that we call goat heads. They hurt. If you have kids interested in trucks, buy an extra creeper for them and let them get in there with you. I love it when my son helps out on the old truck.
