i have an 87 f150 (parts truck), 4speed (definately NOT t-18/19 or np435) supposed to be 4speed overdive. it's behind a I6/300, made of alum., it's a dinky little thing.
what is it and can i swap it behind a 351(5.8)? can it handle the torque? my f250 sucks too much gas and need a solution and i can't afford a ZF.
It sounds like a SROD or top-loader. They were made for Ford by someone else. They have a worse reputation than the M5OD. I would avoid them at all costs, and definitely avoid putting one behind a 351. 300+ lb-ft of torque is going to shred one of those trannies pretty quick.
Actually I got one thats gonna go in once the machine shop finishes their work on my 300, and I find a head thats not cracked (it seems to be a chore now). I beleive its a Tremec toploader. The gear ratios are **about** 3:1 1st 2.1 2nd 1:1 3rd and I forget what the O/D is. They only made them for a few years, for a reason, from what I hear their junk, I didnt know until after i bought it. I myself dont know if their junk or not yet, but I will find out with time! As for handling 300 ft lbs, I'll see if it will hold up to it once everythings back together!
It is small though, I lifted it up by myself with out too much trouble. I got a HD clutch, got the fly wheel ground, and a new pressure plate (i think it was) for it at the tranny store.
Dude those trannys are great for a self contained engine winch setup. My uncle has one that he built just to have. Comes in handy up there in Maine. We charge 50 to pull someone outta anything. Its a nice little rig. Doesnt run to hot till they are warm though.
