I'm putting a V10 in a hot rod project. I'm looking at a 4R100 automatic for my transmision. Is there any differences in 4R100 throughout the years that would make one year or years more desirable? Also is there any differences between application that would make a particular 4R100 more desirable(SuperDuty, F-150, or Lightning?)??
Agreed, the Lightning tranny is by far the best 4R100. If built properly, it is bullet-proof. A bullet-proof 4R100 will run you around $1800 including the torque converter. Add either a Mag-Hytec pan or, a Ford 4X4 factory pan to it for added fluid capacity and you should have a very good package that will last for a long time. The F150's with the 7700 package came with the same transmissions. I have one, I like it!
If you want a really bullet proof 4R100 that comes with a 2 year/ 24000 mile warranty to back it up, go to the link below. Rumor has it that these people really stand behind there product. Also, these transmissions are capable of handling an astounding 1800 ft. lbs. of torque!! But it does come with a price!
Dang that is pricey. I just missed a 2000 Lightning Tranny on Ebay for $455 plus shipping!!!! I but the bid with 14 seconds left and I still lost. You win some you loose some. I'm really looking for I can used one w/ 50k or less that I can make sure its in good shape and put into service.
The Lightning is even stronger than the SuperDuty trans that the V-10 usually is paired with. Isn't the torque rating basically the same?
Same tranny, just easier to find one that was pulled out of a wrecked Lightning than is will be to find one that was behind a V10. Also, if you do get one out of a Lightning, then make sure you at least get the 4X4 pan or an aftermarket deep pan so you will have the extra fluid capacity.....and add a cooler for safe measure.
