Steering Coupler

Don't know if that is what it's called but I'm talking about the piece of rubber or whatever it is that joins the shaft from the steering wheel to the shaft coming out of the steering box. Mine is ripped in half and my steering is loosey goosey and definetly dumb and dangerous. How do I go about replacing this thing. Do I have to remove the gear box? Thanks for any help in advance.

Yeah, thats it. It is also called the rag joint. I swaped mine out when I was putting in a new gear box. You can get them at Auto Zone from the "help" section (I think that is what the section is called). If you can't find it, just ask. Any auto parts store will have it. The one in the "help" section is a universal one and works fine. To answer your last question depends on if the one in the truck is original or not. If it is original, then you are going to have to grind off two of the original studs on your coupler's metal frame. To get the coupler out you will either have to pull the steering wheel and colum up into the cab about two inches or take out two of the three bolts on the gear box. Since I was swaping boxes, I will let you guess which I did. Once you get the rag joint out you will see how the new rubber goes on and what new parts from the kit you are going to use. Now, if your rag joint has already been swaped then you should just be able to unbolt everything and just pull it right out with out moving other stuff. I was not this lucky. This topic has been gone over before so if you still need more info then do a search on steering coupler and rag joint.

Best of luck to you,
Austin Black
