I've got a '02 Explorer with 56k miles. Starting last week some time, when I park it on a nose up incline with the defroster on I get a nasty odor coming out of the vents. It's kind of like a burning plastic smell. It actually smells exactly like the pretzel carts in NYC (not good). It's definitely not a coolant or mildew smell and it's only when the defroster is on so I'm assuming it has something to do with the AC.
Anyone have any idea what it could be? Thanks - Brad
Brad, I can't believe I've actually found someone who has had the same problem as me. I been searching and posting all over the internet to try to find out whats going on with my truck. I have an '01 Sport trac but it's basically the same vehicle. I have noticed that plastic burning smell whenever I use the A/C. I cannot figure out what it is. It doesn't seem to be hurting anything and it goes away after a minute or so. If you find out what it is please let me know, and I will do likewise. Good luck!
I hate my local Ford dealership so much that I refuse to bring it in to check it out. I'm going to try to figure it out on my own. I'll let you know if I find anything. Thanks - Brad
Is it only with a/c or does it happen with fan use?
Could it be the fan motor? Maybe the fan is semi-frozen and is pulling too many amps getting going and is heating the surrounding plastic up.
Mine only does it with the defroster/AC on and only does it when I'm parked on an uphill incline. I never smell it with just the heat on. It's strange.
