inline to a V engine? Just as long as it is a V8 and not a V6.
An inline six has as much torque and lugging power as any V8 the same size so if you drop in a V6, you probaly won't be happy.
If your heart is set on a V8, 302s make pretty happy replacements
with not too much mods.
I have taken out a 300 and put in a 302... now I'm putting in a 360 that was sold to me as a 390. I had another 390 that needs a rebuild... if you want more power than the 300 don't bother w/ a 302.. they can be decent, but for the effort, go bigger. If you don't want to have to replace your tranny, you can put in a 351W or 351C. Otherwise 352/360/390 require a different bellhousing, 351M/400/429/460 require still another bellhousing. I'm installing my 3rd Ford truck motor and I'm tired of swapping, it's alot of work. Go big if the intent is to feel more power. My Humble opinion of coarse. Expect to have to get a V8 radiator and different engine perches. If you have a manual, there are some clutch bracketry stuff that may have to be acquired too. It's certainly doable.
I just finished with my swap from an I6 to a 351 windsor. you need new perches from a truck with a 302 or 351. also i used the 6 cylinder radiator i had to splice a flex hose to reach the bottom of the radiator since it was on the passenger side instead of drivers like a 302 or 351 w. also you might need a different accelerator linkage and definately don't use the I6 flywheel on a 351w or 302 because they have an imbalance unlike the i6.
I swapped from a I-6 4 speed to a 390 with C6. The frame towers were the same, just moved back on the frame a couple inches. Different tranny, linkage, and steering column. I already had a 3-core radiator, but I would put in a 4 row if I was replacing. Front springs started to sag also, found out there are heavier coils for v-8's. Not a real bad swap, just a lot of time.
