Bumping noise underneath

All stock underneath.
When hitting bump or hole with left rear I hear something underneath the rear of the cab go bump just a microsecond AFTER the bump. Checked out everything I could, kicking and shaking stuff, all seemed tight. Doesn't sound or feel like a shock, seems to be in the middle lengthwise on left side.
Ideas??

Steve do you have the extra helper springs in the rear ?
the helpers will clang or bump the snubber in the rear sometimes.
Also if the cab mounts are not tight it could cause a bump type sound.
A few yrs ago we had a few problems with the cab mounts (the holes in the cab were not centered correctly on the mounts) and the bolts and edge of the sheet metal would catch and cause a poping sound .There was a TSB out on this I do believe.
Not sure if 05 's are having this issue or not .

Lots of stuff can get loose over time. Crawl around under there and grab everything you see and give it a good shake.

Things that I have seen get loose on my 94 F250 and other cars include...

Exhaust systems, check the entire length, sometimes a hanger is loose and the muffler or pipes go thump. Crash guard or splash pans protecting things like gas tank, engine etc. If you have runing boards or steps on your truck, sometimes the mounts go way under and get loose. Drive shaft center carriers. Engine/tranny mounts. Heat shields. Shock and spring mounts. Sway bars. Resonance dampers, look like beer cans hanging from exhaust pipes. Gas tank mounts. Bed hold downs.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Thanks guys,
I went under yesterday and checked all that I could find EXCEPT for the bed bolts. Guess I'll put a socket on them. Everything else is good and tight.
I looked in the TSBs (all F series) and didn't find anything, closest thing I found was rear leaf noise on a F150.

What has been everyone's experience with getting a dealer to do a free fix on a TSB, especially when they don't notify you of a problem?
It's a bite being past warranty....

If your out of warranty it could get sticky unless the tsb has a date or mileage extension written into it. you need to read the tsb before going in.
Steve have you ever greased the slip joint on your drive shaft.
We have had a few guys complain about a clunk type bump from it also.

No TSB for this issue. I don't plan to take it in, I'll keep looking for it myself. I'm just limited because my driveway is on a slope and the street, well, forget about it!
I know about the spline slip, this isn't it.
What it feels like (and sounds) is kinda like a bad ball joint clunk but in the middle of the truck.

You know how to chk for them ? (ball joints)
raise the front ,put a long bar or 2 x4 under the tire and raise up and down any movement there bad.
Take a look where the rear of the front spring hangars are ,the shackle runs real close to the frame on one side. I think its the drivers side.could be in there also.
I'm just throwing Ideas out to you now.

You didn't get a tree branch or something caught between the bed and the cab did you? I had that once drove crazy .

I recently received a PM from another member with 0 posts. He said he found the noise on his truck and it was the rear cab mounts. He raplaced them and stated he elongated the holes so it wouldn't "touch". I suggested he post it for all to see but he didn't.

Ok, so, are these the pointed pin looking things?
Sort'a unable to find them.

I occassionaly hear a bump or clunk under mine and it appears it is just the shackle hanger on the front springs bumping the frame every once in a while.

Mine does the same thing, can't figure it out. I swear it is coming from under the passenger side footwell. I can't really remember it doing it before the lift, but I only notice it while going over the speedbumps in my housing division I am at for another week. I hit them and about a second later ker-bump. I thought it might be a shock or spring bushing, but no luck finding it yet.

Don't know if this will help or not. I chased noises from under my truck for quite a while. Sometimes it would sound like the front passenger, later sounds like something bumping the frame toward the rear of the truck, next it might sound like popping or rubbing underneath. I finally broke down and replaced all of the swaybar bushings and drop link bushings with poly bushings. I think the main source of the sound was the bushings that hold the swaybar on the front axle. Looked fine until I took them apart and saw they were egg shaped. As of now all is well as far as sound. I do have one more set of bushings to replace on the draglink. Hope this helps.

Now it sounds like a loose, rattling washer reservoir. Except, the reservoir is on the other side.....

Just an update because I forgot to post...
I discovered it was the left front shock. All went quiet when I installed the Bilsteins last year. Thanks for the ideas.

Maybe try your spare tire carrier mine was loose and made that sound also right after a bump or stopping, it would feel kind of like gas sloshing around in a half full slip tank
