I have a 79 F-100 300 six with three on the tree , I have been looking for a granny four speed but have not had any luck, does any one know if a later model will work, because that is all I can find at a reasonable price, thanks
LAST EDITED ON 21-Aug-01 AT 11:22 PM (EST)[p]i have a granny i'll sell ya...it's an NP435 in my 77 F-150 4x4..rebuilt it a year ago...1300 bucks and i'll throw in the truck for free!!!!
have you been checking "used parts" lots??many ford pickups, especially F-250s had them, from what i've seen around here in VA...
I got an NP435 out of my 67. It was matched with a 360, it's just sitting there right now, I have no plans for it. If you're interested let me know, I could use some spending money and don't see why it should go to waste.

The NP435 will work with your 300-6 with the right bellhousing. I have a couple of small block bellhousings laying around but I do not know if they will work. I know for sure one is off of a 3 speed. I would get the NP435 that jdbanks is offering. These trannys are indestructible and from some points of view in high demand becuase of the quality. A bell housing should not be too hard to find. The one off of your 300-6 may even work. All you can do is try it out and see. If not I think lakewood and RCI and other companies make blowproof universal bellhousings.

I don't know the specifics on when or if they even stopped making them. But I know for sure they were available in the trucks up until 79. They may be in some into the 80's as well but I cannot back this up.

It may or may not be the right length. The only thing you can do is put the tranny in and find out. Hopefully if there is a problem, the driveshaft will be too long. Then you can take it to a driveline place or a trucking place and have the driveshaft shortened down to the right length. Or you could always measure the approximate length and go to a bone yard and see what you can find. You will also have to find the right slip yoke for the tranny also. I would think that the one from your 3 speed would work though. If not these are always plentiful in boneyards as well. There is always the option of having a new one made too. It cost me a little under $200 I believe to have a brand new driveshaft made for my 78. Then it cost me another $130 to have a new yoke welded on and have the shaft rebalanced because I launched it off of the truck and damaged it. I would assume that it would cost the same to have the driveshaft shortened as well since that was the same process. The boneyard would be my first stop though. Just as an example, I used the driveshaft from a 78 T-bird in My 83 Ranger with the 302 and C6 in it. It was the perfect length, i just had to change the slipyoke to fit the C6.

The New Process 435 transmission was used in Chrysler (1963-1993 ), Ford (1964-1987 ) and G.M. (1963-1972 ) trucks. These transmissions have a 6.68 to 1 1st gear ratio in all three applications. While Chrysler and G.M. applications also offered a 4.56 to 1 ratio. The Ford versions adapted real well into the early Broncos (1966-1977 ) and late Jeep CJs (1980-1986 ) with only minor modifications. While other conversions require more modifications including drive shafts lengths. The NP 435 is a HD transmission with cast iron case and aluminum cover. It is synchronized 2nd through 4th gear with sliding gear for 1st and reverse. They ran a solid cluster on needle bearings and a tapered main drive gear bearing on most applications. Our rebuilt transmissions include all new bearings, seals, gaskets and whatever it takes to make them a good reliable transmission. These transmissions are available as stock replacement or as conversions
I was looking around and found this,
I'm not sure about a 79, but, it's not long since I did the 3.03 to NP 435 swap in a 1980, and, there were no bellhousing problems, that end is a bolt up, but, the 435 uses a larger driveshaft yoke(same size as a C6 uses) and a slightly longer driveshaft. I also swapped the 435 into my 82, in place of a SROD 3speed/od, and, the stock driveshaft was the right legnth.
BTW, have fun attacking your floorpan with a sawz-all....

Another Ford Granny low 4sp option is the BorgWarner T18. I got one in a 69 F100 that is perhaps going into my 76 shortly. I also have a "rug" 3sp+Od that came out of my 79 f150. I'm in the proccess now of swapping the 302 from my 79 to my 76. I'm not precisely sure just exactly what the granny ratio is but it's pretty much useless for me most of the time. I have it currently on the ground next to my 79 OD tranny and the input shafts look to be the same dimmensions. My 76 has a two piece driveline, my 79 a long one piece. The T18 I have has a knuckle output for a U-joint so that it needs a two piece driveline w/ a slip yoke on the second part. The OD has a slip yoke end on it w/ a fairly long tailshaft since the one piece driveline is kind of overlength. I understand there is a similar BorgWarner tranny called a T19. I believe that the Borg Warners were used as well into the late 80s as a HD option. It has a cast iron case and shift tower. I could take a digital picture of them if you wish and post them.
I'm in Nacogdoches, TX. Ever heard of it? It's about 3 or 4 hours south of you I belive. Also East TX, just not as far north. As far as price, I was told to ask $200, so how does a $100 sound? I don't really have a use for it and don't want to see it going to waste. Basically just cluttering up the yard now. Or if you have anything interesting to trade, let me know. My e-mail is batman_josh(No Email Addresses In Posts!) if you would prefer to send me a message there that is fine. Thanks.

i just did the swap your bell housing will work the np 435 is a direct bolt on the cluch and throu out bearing are the same. the drive shaft will have to be changed to a 2 piece the np 435 does not have a slipyoke. if ur truck is a regular cab long box u have a 133" wheel bace. use a 2 piece shaft from a nother 133" truck most common on F250s you will also need the carrier bearing mount or make one like i did i can make one for you from my blue print but will have to get a price this is alos stronger than stock. the one on the 250 i took my parts off was riveted and welded to the cab mount cross over. you will have to drill 2, 1/2" holes into the crossover to mount it.ill leave the mount with out the holes drilled so you can get the holes right you will need a conversion u-joint if your rear axel is differnt then the doner truck
I already have my NP in the truck , It went very smooth , the junk yard man gave me the two piece drive shaft with the carrier bearing bracket and all, I replaced all the U joints and carrier bearing and I LOVE IT, I think I could pull an elephant up a hill with it now!!!
I'm in the process of putting power steering on it now , hope to have that done this weekend ,
thanks for your input tho
