Injector pump timing

Injector pump timing

We replaced the inj. pump on my 89 7.3, now I have a lot of fuel smoke with the engine cold or hot. We did not remove the timing cover, is it possible to have moved the inj. pump drive gear with the cover on? Thanks

if you didnt remove the drive cover, the gear should not move. the timing marks on the mounting flange are just to get it started. small movement of the pump will make signifcant change in the timing. I am assuming that by fuel smoke, you are talking under load/heavy acceleration and that may be due to increased fuel delivery pressure (internal adjustment). How does the engine sound ... ruff , smooth, lazy. The top of the pump to the passenger side will advance the timing, not more than the thickness of the stake marks on the flange. | pump |

No, when it"s setting idling there's so much smoke you'd think it was on fire,it did not smoke with the old pump, this is a rebuilt NAPA pump. I'll try advancing it and see if it helps. thanks
