ever heard of puttin a quart of atf to every fill up at the pump? supposed to help lube up injection system but i'm worried about carbon build up after repeated use. i know that they say pour a little bit of tranny fluid in throught the carb on gas engines to clean out carbon. what do you diesel guys think about this?

I wonder what the red color of the ATF would do to the diesel if and when you were stopped and checked for off road fuel in your tank. Off road fuel is dyed red. IMHO it's not a good idea, why not use Diesel Kleen instead?
I always use 1 qt atf in my 1985 300td. Lots of old merc. people do this.
At least they do on the Merc forums. I also prime my new fuel filters
with ATF. The engine runs quiter, has more power and gets better fuel
milage. Also I do this in my 84 6.9l E350. I think my Mercedes would like
straight ATF if it could afford it.
That's a new one for me. I have two tanks, so I might start trying that in one of them. Right now I'm starting on a dual shot of chevron additive for diesel fuel.
LTH I put two qts ATF per tank in my 6.9l van. Don't put in every tank though but I do on my Mercedes. I also prime the new filters with it when I change them. I buy the cheapest ATF I can find. They don't know the difference. It seems to make a more noticable difference in the Mercedes. It sure does seem to clean the injecters up and spray better. I think I probably need to replace them on the MB. Can't seem to kill that old car. It just seems to run and keep running.
4ounces of ATF for every 20gallons will do the job nicely. If you put too much in you may find the truck may run a little rough or maybe not and you may find too much ATF will cause some smoking out the pipes.
Do a search online(IE google) you'll find ATF in diesels from way back years ago and you will find that using ATF additive in diesel fuel has been used succesfully for several several years and those old guys are still mounting up the miles on their ole timer diesels.
well ive run atf in some other diesels to clean the carbon off the injectors apperantly it has a real good detergent action idk but its seems like it would lube the system too. if you want ya'll could find an atf thats not red and run that so you don't get into trouble
I don't think the red will be a problem unless you run almost streight ATF. My MB would like that but it can forget it. When I prime a new filter though it sure likes that.
IF you think about this average 15 gallons of Deisel mixed with 1 guart of atf it is a 60 to I mixture its not going to change the color much if at all.
