what would a round a bout cost of putting a clutch in a 92 ranger 4.0 4x4 be? i can pick one up for $1000 but it needs a clutch. motor runs good 90,000 miles.
who does the work, you or a shop? Autozone clutch kit (PP, disk, Throwout bearing, pilot bearing) lifetime guarantee around $200. New slave cyl (do while trans is out) about $80, turn flywheel about $25. If you have the trans checked and it needs work that will depend, does it have the metal shift rail plugs, if not is there any interior damage becuse they have leaked all the fluid out. I paid around $800 to have mine R&Rd due to the shift plugs leaking (maybe more cant really rember), about 30000 miles later had to pull because OD went out another $600 or so, Autozone gave me a new clutch kit, I R&Rd the slave again just for GP's. I pulled and installed the trans each time. Last time I also went for new Ujoints, carrier bearing, rear diff seal. I would add synthetic fluid at a couple of bucks a quart, ya need about 3 I think. Probably a good time to R&R the master cyl also, they tend to go after a new slave is installed, Maybe $40-50.
You need to add for the transfer case lube any work it may need, probably do the rear diff and front while at it!
For a shop I would be afraid to guess for this stuff, but figure $65-75 per hour and they would get about 10-15 hr labor to do all, plus parts.
Your time its up to you, probably looking with purchase around 2500-3000$ would be a safe guess. if done in a shop may be way more.
The laundry list of things to replace is a good reason to keep your truck maintained. The people that dont, drive about 90,000 without doing anything but tires, brakes and irregular oil changes, never wax it or clean the interior, and then they sell it for $1000 after they buy a new truck to beat the crap out of. Remember it's a 4x4, which means theres more to go wrong. Oh BTW, in 1992 did it even have the 100,000 miles odometer??? if not i would suspect it has about 190,000 miles unless the owner can prove otherwise. Don't expect much for $1000
