Pilot bearing

I have a 85 Ford Ranger 4x4 that I am changing the clutch in. My question is where does the pilot bearing go? in the crank or in the flywheel? The manual I have shows a picture and it looks like it goes in the flywheel but the instructions say to put it in the crank. any suggestions would be appreciated.

I believe it goes in the crank.

There is a machined hole in the crank shaft. The pilot bearing goes in that hole and accepts the input shaft of your transmission. If you have a choice, use the bearing, not the bushing type.

I just finishe a replacement on my 88.

The 2.9 has the pilot BEARING in the flywheel.
If its not a 2.9 then I don't know .

Where did the old one come out of?

The engine is a 2.8. the old one came out of the flywheel but I was told it was wrong. when I got the engine it has in it now it had the pilot bearing in the crank. When I took the old engine out of my truck it was in the flywheel. The transmission that I just removed had a destroyed front bearing. you could move the input shaft back and forth and up and down. I was thinking that this happened because the pilot bearing was in the wrong place.

pilot bearing

i just put a 1985 five speed tranny in my 1983 ranger 4x4 2.8 litre (it had a four speed that made so much noise that you could not here the engine while driving it.) any how the 83 flywheel did not have bearing in it. it was in the crank. but the 85 bearing was in the flywheel. the shaft on the 83 four speed was longer than the 85 five speed. the flywheels were totally different. i had to go back to the junk yard and get the 85 flywheel to use with the 85 tranny. i would say if you have the 85 five speed the bearing goes in the flywheel.

My chiltons manual shows different configurations for the 2.0, 2.3, 2.8, 2.9 3.0 & 4.0 engines.
My reference is chilton's part #8159, 83-94 repair manual for bronco II, exploder, ranger.
If the pilot bearing that should have been in the flywheel and not in the crank definitely could have contributed to destroying the front tranny bearing ,I think theraflu is on the right track, a ford typical, different configurations for different powerplant and years.
Hmmm, maybe that is why my tranny went TU before. I'm finding all sorts of things that previous owners did to my truck, or should I say did not do, like put everything back the way it belonged . . .

Heaven forbid, but you could do a test fit, put the bearing in the flywheel and fit the engine, if it won't bury the input shaft and mate the surfaces, then the bearing may need to go into the crank.

Good luck

Rich
