Conversion Problems (Manual to Automatic)
First I want to thank everyone for their input.
I decided to cut out the c/v joint and just put in a u-joint. I had to test it to see if it would hold up. First I pulled out a stump from a tree I had sawed down about a month earlier. I broke my 12,000 tow strap (more than likely because of how I hooked it up). I bought a 20,000 pound tow strap and was able to get it out. It came out really hard. Then I drove it in 4wd on pavement in and made a couple of turns to test the strength. then I took it to the mountains and climbed some hills and tried to climb others. The U-joint is working fine so far with no sign of stress. I guess time will tell. The real test will come when I do a custom 2-3" lift on the truck to run 35's.
That is interesting to know that the 1978 mentioned did not have a c/v joint on the front axle. I wonder if the adapter I got was used in 1978. Then in 1979 Ford decided to improve the front drive line and use a longer adapter.

Sorry I didn't see your post sooner, could have saved ya lots of trouble. Yes they did use two lengths adaptors. You were lucky to have gone the route you did. It saves lots of money on driveshafts. I have done many of these conversions, and just simply install the driveshaft in the other way!!! WOW, It does really work, I promise. The driveshaft used with the later short ext housing is non/CV type. But it will work with the other one. Good luck. Maybe you can go back to a CV style later now that you can install it. Brent
