Is a 2000 Mountaineer with auto trans/ AWD worth bothering with to buy used? 97K on the clock. Are there any issues with the known AWD system? Someone wants to trade me even, I presume, as they don't mention $$, the Mountaineer for my "lightly crashed" 99 Jeep Wrangler, that I am asking $4200 for. It seems the used price guide shows the Mountaineer as lower priced than a 4 WD Explorer. I am hesitant on this deal.
Every vehicle on the used market (heck, even from the factory) is different in terms of how it will weather the years.
If you are leery, take the ride to a mechanic and let him/her inspect the whole ride over. You don't have to do this alone, especially on such a purchase.
With AWD, I assume 5.0L v8. Correct? I would snap that up, since the drivetrain is stouter than the v6 version (mainly the tranny) overall.
Of course, I have a real close friend who is a mechanic (If/when I need his guidance) and has his own shop, so it's easy for me to suggest you getting one to inspect this over.
The worst you can do is pass altogether if your hunch is that strong.
I would have to agree with your outlook on used vehicles in general. I am not familiar with the AWD set-up at all. Does it detract from mileage? I don't have much info yet. I am waiting on some pics now. The Nada guide seems to indicate the 2 vehicles are similar in price on the market. But mine is damaged, which makes me wonder why would someone consider trading even up? As far as inspecting the car, I am very comfortable doing this myself.
I do have a couple of weeks before I do any serious shopping, so there is no real rush. The Jeep is still roadworthy. My wife drives it to work every day, and everywhere else for that matter.
