Alright, so its been understood that your dad unhooked the shift cable, and he shifted it into reverse by turning the shaft on the side of the tranny right? If thats the case, then we know the linkage in the tranny is fine. I'd start looking between the column and the cable going down to the tranny.
i was out today working on it and it the linkage was still unhooked from the tranny i was in reverse i crawled under there and put it in drive on the tranny.
i drove it for a few minutes i also put it in park and had someone tug on me backwards to try what another person said (didnt work) the shifter is still stuck in park and when we hook the linkage back up it is still in park any ideas.
pull the linkage off the column and see if it moves. the problem is either in the linkage, or the column. i think it is a column problem, and you are most likely going to either have to repair it, change the column(easier), or put in a floor shifter.
