COP Repair

I just found out that I have the P0301 code on my '99 F150 4.6, and I want to get the coil and plug replaced for Cylinder 1. I understand that this is a purely subjective question, but is $348 to get this replaced from a Ford dealership the equivalent of getting raped? I have a feeling that it is. Is just replacing the plug on cylinder one a pretty quick process since it's an easy access cylinder? I've read many posts on people with this problem, so I know that it's most likely a coil and/or plug. Oh, and a wire/plug job at the Ford dealership is a whopping $470, which I just can't seem to justify. Other local shops (Firestone, Pep Boys) will do it for between $250 and $300. Any opinions on pricing and such would be much appreciated.

....follow up....

Oh, and are there any threads on the site that show how to replace a COP? I guess it would pretty much be the same process as a plug, but I'm making sure.

There's one in the sticky for changing plugs. Just stop when you get to the part about the plugs.

Well, I just read that the 4.6's do not have COP's, so is it possible for the problem to still be coil-related since the scan code only indicated cylinder 1?

Possible, but those ignition packs don't go out that often. I'd be more inclined to believe plug wire and/or plug issue.

The coil packs are about $40 bucks at advance. But in my case it was water n crap down in the pulg holes. I would start by pulling the wire on 1 to see if it's nice n dry. If so I would replace the one plug ( and replace the other one's later if this fixes the prob). If you've read a lot of threads on this, then you know it could be a lot of things causing this.
