New Here, 95 Bronco Problem-Speedometer

First let me say I'm glad to finally find a Ford truck board. Now lets get down to business.

I have a 95 Bronco Eddie Bauer with the 351. It's never given me a prblem until now. Yesterday I was towing a light trailer down the interstate when my speedometer fell to zero and it shifted out of overdrive. The ABS light came on and the overdrive OFF light started flashing. I shifts really hard now at all shifts up and down. And of coarse the odometer stopped working too.

Is this a common thing? Anyone out there know this one right off their head? I've never taken a vehicle to a dealership ( I've worked at three ) for anything and I don't want to have to start now. So, any guesses, VSS, something electrical, speedometer cable or gauge itself ? Any hepl would be great. Trying not to spend $100 on diagnosis at the stealership.

the VSS is a common problem of ford trucks. it is on the top of the rear diff and should be about $25-$30 at the dealer. i would try that first

That's kinda the direction I was leaning as well, but I've seen were others had the same problem and the dealership couldn't fix it. This made me worry that maybe there is more to it than I know. Seems almost too simple to me. Probably shouldn't have added that part, might have jinxed myself. Anyone else have any input, agree or disagree?

The flashing of the OD off light on the end of the shift stalk indicates that there is a fault in the tranny.....and that there are codes stored. That would be my very first move.....pull the codes. The hard shifts all tell me that the trans 99% sure you have a E4OD is in "safe" or "limp home" mode so as not to mess itself up any worse.

Yes it could be the VSS (that would be a easy and cheap fix), but it could also be something else, and it would be just stupid to start throwing parts at it.

When the fuse blew for the dash in my 150, it did same thing. It did stay in OD however, but did flash repeatadly. I thought about taking it out on a long trip, because the mileage doesn't add up.

I'd check the rear axle and the VSS connections first -- remove the fill plug and see if you have a substantial amount of metal shaving stuck to it, or not. If it's clean check the VSS with an ohm meter, and check the connector for possible corrosion/bad contact.

Thanks for your help so far guys. Am I right to think that on a 95 you have to use Ford's scan too to pull codes? The generic ones won't work will they? I called the dealership today and they said that they would have to charge me $75-$150 for diagnostics. I can fix it myself I just can't see paying that much to pull codes.

Oh yeah, I forgot to ask. Is there a way to get the codes without a scan tool, like a self-check, flash code kinda thing?

You can do it with a paper clip if you want. Click on this link and there will be more info than you need on exactly how to do it.

Oh yea.....you can buy your own OBD2 scan tool for under $100......just shop around. Or most auto parts joints will pull your codes for free!

Will an OBD2 scan tool work on a 95 Bronco? I've never seen a connector for an OBD2 scan tool on my truck.

Thats what I said when I replied, but it won't make it shift out of OD, the light just flashes. The speedometer quits working, the mileage doesn't show. Exact symptoms just reported except for shifting out of OD. Its just a fuse in the fuse panel under the dash on the right side. Might be a 95 thing, I've got a 95 f-150 that it did it in.
