Programmers: I don't know jack.
I'm planning to get a programmer soon but don't really know much real-world info about them, just what the ads claim. I've been told that, if you keep it on the lowest setting, like 40hp, you can remain otherwise stock without damaging anything or puking coolant. Is this true? Also, can the dealership tell that you've been running a programmer if you restore to stock program before bringing it in? Thanks.

This thread will likely be moved to the 6.0L forum by a moderator. Before it does, however, I will add that I also have a '05 PSD and that I am very happy with my SCT Xcal II from Innovative Diesel. They build their own custom tunes, and they have a very good reputation for building a lot of power without damaging your engine or transmission. When buying a SCT, you are not so much buying the product as you are buying the dealer who programs it.
I run their Street Performance tune (400 rwhp/690 rwtq) all of the time and haven't had any issues at all, except for the permanent grin on my face. Several folks run their extreme street and/or extreme race tunes (significantly higher numbers than those I just mentioned) in their daily drivers and also have no issues of any kind. The folks at Innovative seem to have done their homework.
Just my opinion. There are several good performance enhancers out there for the 6.0L. Do some searches, gather some data, and decide what is best for you.
If you never tow you can do that and maybe even more, but here's the real deal get a set of gauges, the factory trans temp is a joke and the boost gauge has been proven to be sort of accurate at best. If you have gauges you know what the temps are and can adjust accordingly. The best products out for the 6.0 are the Bully Dog Triple Dog and Outlook monitor or the Edge Platinum and Attitude monitor. Ther both get you EGT defueling at a temp that you select so your safe as far as EGT goes and you can elect HP levels as you drive, no stopping and reprogramming for minutes to get different HP levels. They also have transmission controsal that allow you to select how you want the trans to shift, not how someone that never drives your truck wants it to shift. The Edge even has a turbo timer built into it. Either of these will cost more than a programmer alone, but you need the gauges and both of these have them included and it also makes the gauge installation very very easy too. Call us if you have any questions we'll be glad to help you.

The bullydog triple with monitor looks like this:

There are so many good options out there. There is the BD Lightning Juice Platinum

The BD X-Tuner

Another option is the X-Monitor from BD-Diesel.

There are many great products. Everyone has a reason for prefering one over another. The SCT X-cal2 is also a great product, but it will not take care of your need for guages, you be buying a digital guage package from another company, or you will find yourself with a stack of guages going up your A-Pillar. Decide what you want, what you need, and what you can afford. Good luck!
