Hey guys I thought I might share this with somebody who might actually think its cool. I had my 390 at the machine shop and the machinist called me today at work he started off by saying" the motor you brought me is not a 390" He paused long enough to think to myself "great its a 360." I was suprised when he told me that it is actually a 410. I took off an hour from work and had him show me how he came to that conclusion. I feel like a little boy on christmas. i told my wife but she did not think it was too cool. It is gonna cost me a little more to have it balanced properly but it should be worth it.
I had already bought a crane 941 cam. The machinist seemed bummed when I did not want to put a bigger cam in there. What do you guys think?
If it is indeed a 410, in stock Ford configuration, then it's pretty high compressin. So, you could bump up the cam a little. but, to really appreciate the cam, you'll want good flowing heads/valves, headers and 750+ CFM carb.
What do you want this truck to do? Also, tell us more about the truck (auto, stick, 4x4, 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, gears, tire diameter?? etc etc). Are you changing pistons at the shop?
the truck is a 73 ford f100 2wd with a c6 tranny. i am in the process of restoring the whole truck. This is my first ford. I bought the truck for 500. My heads have been ported new everything and stainless steel cj valves have been installed. i have a edelbrock 750 but would really like to use a holley. I will be putting new pistons, bore it out, modify oil passages, I do not know if it is a factory 410 but the crank is from a 428. The pistons are marked 410 if this means anything.
That is good news. depending on the port job and intake you can run awide variety of cams.
What do you want to do with this truck? Cruise it? race it? Or just want lots of power no matter what the idle/driveablity?
This is what will determine the cam choice at this point. Me I say go big and drive it like you stole it.
Factory 410's used the IU 428 crank. Other 428 cranks were the CJ IUB and SCJ IUA. The IU/IUB marking should be on the edge of the 7th counterweight. Good deal on the 410!
Well, seeing as it's a half-ton, it's probably got 3.73 or smaller (numerically) gears. You've got a lot to work with there. It's really about budget at this point. How much do you want to spend?
If hauling a load to the dump will be your biggest load (say 500-1500 lbs), then you could probably go to a cam like the 343801 Crane, and a higher stall torque converter. But that cam will probably require a lot of new valve-train parts. Try to find out what gear ratio you have and what size tires you want to run and how much money you want to squander aimlessly into an old truck :-)
It's better to have alot of timing advance on a lower compression motor than retarded timing on high compression motor that will detonate when you stick your foot into it more than 1/2 throttle. 410's were advertised at 10.5 cr. Large chamber and port heads like C4AE 6090G 427 LR will not only breathe better than those standard 390/410 heads but lower you to a practical cr unless you know how to run pump gas with 194 to 200 BMEP numbers.
On exhaust run a X crossover with your system with free flowing mufflers.

I have dt2eea heads (I think that is the right casting) they have been ported have stainless steel oversized valves new springs to match cam. Expensive but man do they look sweet. I am not sure what compression I am running the machinist was going to recalculate and let me know. He said the motor will probally be running anywhere from 450 to 500 horse.
