4180 Problem! Need Suggestions!
I have a 83 F250 460 auto with a Holley 4180 carb/factory. The problem i am having is at warmed up idle the carb is running very rich. I have checked the float levels and have even lowered them just in case. The vacumn at warmed up idle is 15 hg and i thought by the way the engine was running too rich maybe the power valve was blown so i replaced it with 10 hg and it made no difference at all. The choke is all the way open. The exhaust stinks and burns your eyes it just seems to be too rich. The power valve has the blow out protector as we installed that 2-3 years ago. Is there a o ring/ gasket that needs replaced that might be causing the power valve to get a weak vacumn which in turn is letting the power valve open at idle? What can be causing this over rich idle problem?
Thanks
Gene
Possible causes: needle/seat not sealing, PV, high float level, sunk float, high fuel pressure, dirt/grit in needle/seat, likely have missed a few, but those are the most likely.
Worked on the truck ALL day today! I found that the intake bolts were almost loose. I tightened them about a 1/2 to 5/8 of a turn to get them snug! This was with my 3/8 drive not my 1/2 inch super leverage rachet. I replaced the gasket under the EGR housing base and also the carb base gasket. I had a ignition problem a month ago due to a bad stator assembly which was causing alot of backfires and reaked havoc on the exhaust which was 6 mos old. I also replaced the o rings on the accellerator pump transfer tube that is above the power valve. the o rings looked bad. Plus i replaced the metering block gasket and the fuel bowl gasket. It seems to run better now but i think the vacuum should be higher. I have 16-17 hg now. I was looking for about 20. I will put new plugs in after a week or so of driving just to see if works ok and doesn`t run over rich again! I will play with the timing tomorrow after i drive it for a couple of trips to see if that will help. I think the idle could be set alittle higher also but time will tell!
Thanks
Gene
