I'm running a 60 HP or so SCT custom tune and started experiencing some coolant puking like many others.
Removed 1 quart and replaced the cap (coolant now hot registers just below the "COLD ADD" line.
After 2 days of wayyy harder driving (all in the name of testing) -- no sign of pukage.
I still want to take off the EGR pipe and plug it internally so there are no external signs....that way the coolant does not have to be re-routed and the EGR/coolant manifold gets no where as hot.
BTW...54F in Detroit in January!! My truck seems to like this weather better than the cold, cold stuff.
Good intel, thanks. This is consistant with what I heard from a Ford Diesel Tech. There are alot of folks that are convinced that their head gaskets are blown because of this symptom. Your post is consistant with what I stated a couple of weeks ago about the caps. A tech told me that they are a weak point, and once they blow they need to be replaced. Of course if the head gasket was the cause of the blown cap, that would be a different story.

I just picked up my truck from dealer. Service adviser told me he would call me when the new stickers cam in. He said that the coolant bottles min and max lines are wrong! so some trucks are getting hot and blowing coolant out. Not just the extra coolant but trucks are blowing out more than they are overfilled causing there not to be enough coolant later after cool down. causing over heating later.
drfdog, that would make sense if the overfilled coolant caused the cap to blow, and then the now damaged cap would not hold the required pressure, causing more coolant to escape? Hmmm.
Waddya think? Might just be the answer to a long standing question.
This is just theory, we know this. But if this is in fact true, I wonder how many, if any head gaskets were replaced on oversight, due to a damaged cap. With all of the coolant barfing out, could this reasonably be assumed by a "qualified tech"?
That would be alot of unneaded warranty costs. The consumer would feel that pain in the long run too.
I replaced my cap and it made no difference at all. I even lowered my coolant level like the tech told me. In stock mode it still pukes when under heavy loads. With the superchip in I will puke a gallon or more. And if your thinking the chip caused it,your wrong, my truck did it before I had put it in. It seems like an easy out for ford and they are not to interested in looking,or fixing, the real problem. The head gasket or the EGC is the problem. Here is something for people to think about! Lets say the coolant system is getting over pressurized by a bad head gasket or EGC. It pukes out coolant because there is not very much room in the resivour(sp). Now ford tells you to lower the level, thus making more room for the coolant and excess air to seperate before it blows out the cap. I bet if a person would put a pressure guage on the coolant syatem, and work it hard, there would be an over pressure reading and just blow out air.Not coolant!! But how would any one know unless they have the equipment to test. Seems like an easy out for ford.
No I do not know exactly where the new level should be. But I do know that about two months ago I had the high pressure fuel pump o-ring go out on my truck. When it was repaired I noticed that the new coolant level was about a 3/8 of an inch below the min line (cold). I asked the tech and he said that is where they want the level to be now. No explination at the time, but putting two and two together it makes sense now.
I just had my cap and reserve bottle replaced. i had coolant puking problem also. I use the Diablo Pred at 60HP tune. The puking problem went away completely. I kept the level on minimum always and still puked coolant. Same level now but no puking at all.
