Do open headers with mufflers connected directly to the collector give the HP/TQ increase some people think they do? Would you make more power with a free flowing full exhuast with an x or crossover tube, or headers and mufflers connected to the collectors?

 

Untill you get into high horsepower numbers none of that really matters. X or crossover pipes should go before the mufflers. How will you be using your truck?

 

If you've got 4 digit hp numbers, then open headers will definately make more power. However, I've seen many healthy 600-750 hp machines with a full exhaust on them, and the owners claim it has more tractible power than open headers.

 

also remember motors can be built 2 ways. 1 way can run better and make more power with open exhaust. but put pipes on it and it will get beat by a 5 year old on a tricycle.
then you can build a motor that will run like a banshee with a properly tuned exhaust,
but pull the pipes off and it will run like dog doo-doo with a high fiber content.

 

Thats what I figured, yet some advertising would make you think different. I'm running 2 1/2 collector x-tensions to a crossover tube than dual flowmaster 40s. From collector to end of flowmasters is about 30". Runs real well and sounds nice. Thanx guys.
