newbie... 390 specs
Hello all.
I thinking about purchasing a 1966 Ford F100 pickup with a Ford 390 engine. A 1966 wasn't available for the 390, so I know it isn't original. 1976 is stamped in the oil pan... does that mean it is a 1976 engine? Is there anyway to tell what engine it is? Does anyone have a stock specs for my Ford 390?
Right now it has a 3 speed manual tranny in it (on the floor). I was also curious as to if I could swap out the 3 speed for a 4 or 5 speed manual? And if so, from what vehicles?
Here she is.. What do you guys think??

My 69 F100 w/ 390 has a T-18 4speed similar to the NP435 it is essentially a three speed w/ a granny low first gear. The 66 may not have had a 390 (or did they? they existed then?) but certainly they had 352's in that year which is essentially the same block although the 390 is bored .05 over a 352. You might find a date stamp on the block. It would be something like (random ex 6C14 this would code out to 6 for 76 C for third month March and 14 for the 14th of March. 76 is the last year of FE motor production and only in trucks after 69 or 70. So much time has gone by that it's uncertain how many times or if the motor has been rebuilt. Finding the date stamp on the block would probably be the most accurate way of dating the engine, but does it really matter? If you wanted to spend big bucks like at least 1500 to 2000 you could make an aftermarket Tremec or other trannies like Richmonds work but my guess is it ain't worth it for that truck at those prices. I'm told the tranny that was behind my 79 F150 w/ 302 would have been usable behind my 390 bellhousing as well. It is a 3sp + overdrive (4 sp where third is 1:1 and OD is .79:1) The input shafts were the same lenghth and diameter and spline count was the same. Also there were Mustangs in the late 60s w/ 428's and a toploader 4 speed. I've seen some postings of ppl here that have adapted a Mustang toploader to their FE powered trucks.

Bill, I will take a crack at the second part of your question, how can you tell.
Get a 10-12" piece of 14-2 house wire and pull the white wire out. Pull one of the front spark plugs, and place the wire in the hole. Next have a black marker laying against the wire,(Sharpie will do) and with someone turning one of the pullies with a ratchet mark the wire over a complete cycle, it is ok to go a couple of revs if you want.
Next measure the length of the mark on the wire, and report back its length.
