Tim-My 05 F350 is just a joy to drive. I get 17 mpg 1/3 city 1/3 hiway 1/3 back roads. Loaded with 7500lb horse trailer 14.5 mpg. I keep my foot out of it. Overall the truck is just great. I have had one problem and it was not a ford related problem. Just an aftermarket item burned up some electonics. The only issue I have is that I forget that my trailer is hooked up! Its that good! The 6.0 pulls like a diesel should. I have no regrets on my choice. Everyone that I know first hand have never had a problem with there ride. Only time I here of problems is on this site. Lots of people come here for a "fix". I come here to say how much I love this truck. Kinda makes the wife jealous.
Since starting this thread I have gleaned a lot of info from both the PSD and V-10 camps. Needless to say there will always be some degree of "irreconcilable differences".
Bottom line:
1. I've made my decision. In about an hour I'll be sitting down at my local stealership and plod my way thru a special order -06, F-250, CC, short bed, powered by(drum roll, please) a V-10!
2. I fully expect to be eating a lot of veggies once the PSD guys stop throwing reefer castoffs and table scraps at me for my unthinkable decision.
3. I have really been on the fence over these two choices for some time. I guess it boils down to less fuss and fuel availability.
4.I really appreciate all who gave their thoughts and personal experiences.
I guess it boils down to less fuss and fuel availability.
Really???
Of all the reasons to go gasser, that would be the last of mine.
True you can't buy diesel everywhere... But you can buy it ALMOST everywhere. I've NEVER had an issue finding a station with Diesel (and I'm a run-the-tank-to-empty kinda guy)
Less fuss???
I think the diesel is less fuss? Oil change once every 6000 instead of every 3. Fuel filters.. All EASY stuff? What fuss?
If you told me you were going to go gasser because of the $5000 additional price tag I'd say thats a REALLY valid reason.
If you said you don't like the noise and smell of a diesel that's a REALLY valid reason.
If you said you test drove one and didn't like the turbo lag or the way a turbo drives that's a REALLY valid reason.
YOU BETCHA! My wife thinks I am nuts. But since I am trying to get ford to buy back this leaker I do as much research as possible. This includes looking under trucks in parking lots for the infamous bell housing drip. I even went to a auto show in Dec. and tried to make a bet with the factory rep as to whether or not the 06 PSD on the show floor was going to be leaking. He did not take the bet, and oh by the way it was wet! It was not just a little wet either, you could see where it was dripping down from the above the starter.
What did the rep say when you pointed this out to him?
Tim- glad you made a choice. I don't think you can go wrong with either a gasser or diesel. I think it's just personal taste. Thats what makes the USA so great. We can make choices.
i have yet to drive the new 3 valve v10, and i bet i would be impressed.......granted, after adding over 100hp at the wheels of my 6ohh with a tuner, im sure it would not feel as strong, which is important to me.....
as for fuel availability, i have a problem with that......there are many stations around, but the most convieniant stations DO NOT carry it, and this makes refueling when im in a rush to go home a REAL pita......i live 50 miles away, last thing i wanna do is drive 7 miles in the wrong direction.....and having to fill up every three days, this happens once a week for me (im sure with a v10 i would stop more- i get 15.5 always now... w/3.73's AND 35" TIRES)
ONCE AGAIN, CONGRATS, AND YOU WILL BE VERY HAPPY I AM SURE!
I have an '05 F450 (6.0 Powerstroke) with 5,500 miles on it, with a Terex utility service body and 40' hydraulic bucket. I've driven the truck since it had 50 miles on it, and have had no problems with the engine or drivetrain. It normally lives on the street in front of my house but over the holiday's it moved into the driveway. It had been parked for two or three days and I decided to crawl around underneath just to check some things out. I observed NO oil leaks from the engine or trans (though I do have a small hydraulic oil leak from under the bed, but that has nothing to do with Ford).
I think a lot of the problems with the 6.0 are either blown out of porportion or exgaggerated. FWIW I very rarely have a problem finding fuel, though I work in cities and are very good at keeping an eye out for gas stations which sell diesel.
Tim, welcome to FTE. My '04 gets over 19 with a mix of city/hwy. I drove all highway Friday putting 300 miles on a trip to Lake Mary, averaged over 20 mpg empty. I have a 6sp which definitely helps keep the rpms down low. I have a 29 gallon tank and can go over 500 miles between fueling ups. Maintenance=I understand parts for regular maintenace are a little more, but I go 5,000 between oil changes. I just don't see why individuals say it is so much more from a maintenance standpoint to own a diesel. The diesel will come with a 5yr/100,000 warranty, so if you experience injector or turbo problems it would cost some bucks, but if it is covered under warranty all is good.
Reliability-40,000 miles, had the serpentine belt replaced under warranty. Other than that, good fun drivinig. We take my PSD everywhere, it is our preferred transportation.
I also researched the V10, I think it is an extremely impressive engine also. They are now 3 valve/cylinder engines so they are even more powerful. I think both engines have their advantages. Enjoy your shopping, it is FUN!!!
Somewhere up the line in this thread, someone mentioned their oil leaks. Mine is leaking too. Currently has dye in it and going back to dealer Monday for hopeful repair. At any rate, currently have 20K miles with really no other issues r/t 6.0. I really like the truck. FWIW, it has been leaking for about the last 1K miles but still reads almost to the max mark on the dipstick.
I also contemplated the V10 prior to getting this truck. I have no regrets, except my payment is higher.
