throw out bearing question

I replaced a trowout bearing the other day on my '88 f150 4.9L. I noticed the t.o.bearing fork had excessive wear on it approx. 1/8th inc gone. I ordered one and went to put it in today, but had trouble lining up the tranny. My question is....what may cause the bearing to go. It was about 6 years old, perhaps this is just normal wear. what can i watch out for to stop this in the future? And any hints on how to line up the tranny to reinstall it would be greatly appreciated.

Get some thread rod same dia and thread pitch of the bolts i think they are 7/16 coarse thread cut the rod 8 inches long and use them as alignment pins works for me ever time good luck

Thank you for that. Someone suggested that, and it worked. I'm having a little trouble bleeding the slave, and master. Alot of people suggest gravity bleeding. I will try that in the am. But I did it 3 time today, and it still feels a little bit spongy.
