Fuel Guage

OK Guys here is what I have done on my 72 F100.

1. Got a sending unit that works (some generic one from Napa)
2. Hooked it up to an aftermarket guage. It works.
3. Hooked it up to the wire leading to the dash fuel guage, but reads full all the time.

Why doesn't the dash fuel gage do what the aftermarket one does?

I also got a new cluster and installed it because the old one was fried on the back side.

Thanks for your help.

Check your instrument voltage regulator with a continuity tester. The IVR is behind the gauge panel. If you get a blinking light it is OK...a constant light means its bad. Make sure the ignition switch is on when you make the test.

Yes it can be replaced, it should be on the back of the instrumet panal. It is a small rectange box with two blade conecters on it.

The gauge and the sensor have to be the same type. The gauge is looking for a certain resistance at full and another resistance as the tank empties. It is my impression that you might be using the wrong sensor for your gauge. It could be the regulator, but I am more inclined to think it is the gauge/sensor combination since the sensor works with another gauge. Hope this helps. Billemc

Thats true, Billemc. The sender and gauge have to be ohms compatible. I can't remember, offhand, what the Ford range is but I'm thinking somewhere in the 10-75 ohm range full to empty.
If your aftermarket sender isn't compatible with the stock gauge it will never work.

Other guages

Hi All,

Does teh IVR control all the guages????

I stuck a test light into the engine tempt guage wire and got a flashing light.

Get nothing from the eng temp su. When I attached the light to the wire did get a reading which looked right.

Chances are that the guage and the fuel sending unity don't match.

Good news, however, my oil pressure guage works.

OK, good deal, dtony. It sounds like you're on the right track. If you'll go to Ford and get the correct sending unit, like instig8r63 suggested, I'll bet that will solve your problem.
