Got stuck in mud

Well I got stuck for the first time (in this truck) and it didn't even seem bad. I was on what I thought was a dry lake bed and felt a sinking feeling so I stopped and got out. The tires were sunk a couple of inches because the surface was very soft, kind of like tundra. I popped it in reverse to get back to high land and the tires just spun and dug. They sunk about 6 more inches to a slippery clay like mud and then I began to worry. At that point I hit the water level. I tried jacking the front but the jack just sunk even with a pallet under it. A toyota tried pulling me out and got stuck. Same for a jeep cherokee, ford expedition, and an f350 cc diesel like mine. Finally a cummins to the rescue. The only reason the dodge worked was we went and got a couple of hundred feet of cable so he could pull from semi-hard ground. Anyways, 10 hours later I was finally out. There are pics in my gallery because I don't know how to paste them here. If you are ever near Bottomless Lakes in Roswell, STAY OUT.

Similar thing happened to me, water up to the doors almost. A wrecker winched me out in less than an hour. Thank God for cell phones. I did pay a premium, though, and my ego is damaged.

The only redeeming factor was that I pulled out the other f350 that got stuck. It didn't cost me a tow bill, but the chain popped of a tow strap and landed on the f350's hood. I told him I'd pay whatever it cost to fix it but he said dont worry about it. Helpfull people these ranchers and oil rig workers out here. Hopefully I'll run into him at one of the bars and pick up his tab.

I don't think my first reaction if I felt the truck sinking would be to stop the momentum of the truck and get out to see. I think my reaction would have been to floor it and steer toward the closest high ground!

Yeeech, I've been stuck in mud like that before...huge PITA when you break through the surface. I got 'others' involved just like you did. Before the day was over, two 4wd Dodge Parks & Wildlife trucks were stuck, one flatbed wrecker (to unstick the P&W guys), a Chevy 4x4 wrecker (to unstick the flatbed), the manager of the towing companies Chevy 4x4 crewcab longbed (to see WTH happened to two of his units), and finally, my faithful buddy in his 2wd F-250.

I warned them ALL, "You're gonna break the surface and sink, the mud is thick and nasty, I'm telling you this BEFORE you go in!"

None of them listened.

I finally got my truck out with a Hi-Lift, some scrap wood, and a heavy right foot.

Yeah. Yeah. I thought it was maybe an inch of mud so I figured I could just back out of it. Never thought I'd get stuck in a couple of inches of mud on flat ground.

Yeah, I was with my girlfriend. "Lets go to bottomless lakes today" "Lets go see that pretty white dirt over there". Last time I listen to her.

this is why i never understood those people who think that its better to have a narower tire to get to the "hard stuff" than a wide tire that floats on the mud better, i saw a world of difference when i went from a 12.50 wide tire to a 14.5 wide tire. but not applying this to the daily street driver, (i am getting 12.5 wide also) just talking about those mud only folks.

I gotta agree with the post that said getting out to look is only a good idea if you are already stuck. Then get the camera! I have been stuck to the rockers but with 37" tires that is pretty deep! I made a few phone calls and I had seven trucks in the woods. Nice to have friends with big trucks!!

re: stuck in mud. Same just happened to me. $300 later after tow, truck is out but now will not shift out of 4wd into 2wd. Anyone have any ideas about what might have happened and what to do about it, besides paying mechanics to throw parts at problem?

Lockers, maybe. Being more prepared next time, definitely. I have an 8000 pound winch, high lift, and shovels that did me no good because they were in my garage.
Also, my tires have 34000 miles on em, so the tread depth is about half an inch.
At least thats my excuse.
