Most Reliable Engine Swap?

Just curious what would make your list. If you were going to put any Ford motor in a BII, reguardless of power (big or small), what one would you pick?

4.0 hands down. By far the easiest to do, and lots of bang for your buck!

WHY? Isn't bigger better.I never thought about going the other way. My 4.0 Exploder has been very good to me so the 4.0 was an easy decision for me.Either that or my clevland. Don,t really want to go there.

Well bigger is better I guess but I don't plan on turning her into a mosnter and if I wanted to have fun I could bolt on a turbo unit and get more hp with that 2.3 then the 4.0's put out. Now that sounds like fun........ a turbo 2.3L BII?

Well, I suppose anything that was once in a Ranger should theoretically fit in a B2. Like any swap, the key would be to get all of the electronic stuff too - computer and all the wiring (including underdash).

I'd be a little concerned about the available transmission choices though.

Good luck with your swap. Keep us posted!

Checked on the tranny, looks like the 2.3 belhousing and clutch I have now will bolt right up to my FM146. IDK for sure tho. LOL, if I fix my 2.9 it might be a while anyway. These BII's are just too cool.

I guess I started this thread more for interest anyway. Always cool to hear what people are installing in them.

302 with Duraspark (or a points dist fitted with the Pertronix II) and Edelbrock 4 bbl carb backed by a 5 speed with a 2" body lift. A very popular swap.

5.0 swap is popular, but if I was going to go through all the effort to do it, I'd use an EFI setup. Yes, it's more work, but much more reliable.

I disagree, especially for anything that takes a TFI module. If it was DIS then I might agree somewhat. Since I take my vehicles off road, I find the setup much more reliable, especially since I do not like taking my expensive code scanner with me.

Guess we'll hafta disagree on that one. I wheel a lot and the guys that have problems are almost always the carbureted rigs.

I just signed in on this thread & looking info on a complete engine/auto tranny swap in my 88 BII 4x4. Would like to replace the 2.9 with 4.0 along with the tranny. (My tranny is toast and 2.9 coughing badly at 215,000 miles plus 35,000 towed behind motor home) If I found donor two wheel drive vehicle, will my MANUAL transfer case adapt to the tranny? Reading other comments here tell me a rolled over Explorer might be my best bet. What say you ? I ain't NO MAKANIC, but usually can turn the nut in the right direction. .../gene
