Do it yourself v.s. Shops

Guys,

I need some help here. As far as the mechanical skills needed for working on the PSD, I guess I am an average "backyard-hack" and definately not a skilled shop tech.

The typical maintenance is not a big deal for me, however if I venture into the darkside of modifying the 7.3, I can not afford to pull a Homer Simpson and blow up my truck.

Is there a member of this site that lives in the Connecticut Area that has work (diesel modifications) to their rides by a shop that they trust and know?

I am tempted to pull this off myself, but at the same time I appreciate the value, expertise, and skills of a professional and/or working with someone that has "been there and done that".

If I cross that bridge and start wrenching, it will be limited to adding gages, CCV mod, 4" exhaust, 3 position chip (Jody's stock - 80 - 120 hp settings), Sonnax kit, by-pass oil filter and that's about it. The truck was bought used with the K&N FIPK alread on it. I need to see if it's worth going to the Kwik mod. or just leave it the way it is.

The point of this thread is to see if anyone knows of a great diesel shop in CT and/or get some reassurance that the mods I'm planning are okay for a backyard-hack like me to take on.

Thanks for the help.

i have basically everything you want, (just bought a chip last night) and i am 16, i have done all my installs by myself. if you need help on installation, i'm always around. drop me a PM if you have install questions. doing the install yourself will save you alot of money, could mount up to the price of an exhaust system!

i do consider myself "knowledgeable" but not a "mechanic." i only go as far as i know, i DO NOT want to mess this great thing up. if i have questions, i ask the great guys here before i start. they always come around with helpful answers.

Strokin is right. Lots of guys here available for help. The tasks you are talking about are really quite easy. The sonnex will be probably the most difficult.

This forum is awesome, cobra. I am nowhere near a backyard hack in my wrenching abilities but I'm finding that some confidence goes a long way. The men on this forum have been incredible with their knowledge and ability to explain what needs to happen when under the hood. I've owned gassers for 25 years and bought my first diesel a year and a half ago. I never worked on gassers at all and knew NOTHING about diesel engines when I found this forum. Since then I've spent hours in here learning about my truck and have gained the confidence to work on it. I've replaced and repaired a number of items on this truck and haven't broken it yet. (Took some deep breaths before I popped the valve covers to replace the glow plugs...lol) Keep reading and keep asking questions until you're sure of what you're doing. These guys are amazing!

Yeah...most of it isn't rocket science...unless u add so much power to your PSD that u leave orbit...Yikes!...LOL!
I'm of the belief that if u have the right tools and some mechanical ability and
a basic understanding of some physics principles your good to go.
Learning something new CAN be fun! Have fun!

I too, would love to do many things myself but don't.
One of the things you have to consider is if you have a place to SAFELY do the work.
A heavily sloped driveway or curbside in the street aren't the places to do a lot of things.
I'm **** when it comes to safety, think all the factors through before you start a job.
I'm limited because of the above problems.
