Oops, my bad. I forgot that the 351m/400 doesn't have coolant in the intake. I was thinking of the 460. I just replaced my intake on the 351m a few weeks ago and should've remembered. Then again, I can't remember what I did yeaterday. Sorry for the bad info.

Personally, I like the amp meter. Not that it's better than a volt meter, I just like knowing if I'm drawing more than the alternator is putting out.

K.

Great pics TJC. Bigbody, if you have a mechanical temp gauge be careful not to bend the sending wire sharply when it makes this 90º turn out of the block. They use a small solid copper wire to conduct the temp to the gauge and if you bend them sharply you can break it inside the sleeve.

Thanks for the pics TJC. If I can't find it now I'll be making an appointment to the eye doctor.

I'll be sure to be careful with the the line Ivan.

Thanks again everyone. Hopefully I'll post back alter tonight seeing if I was successful in installing it.

Ok guys, got them all in. But, I let the truck run for a min or two. The tmep gauge didnt move. It starts at 130. I'll let it run longer tomorrow. When part of the coolant came out it seemed like plain water so I imagine that explains some of the over heating issue. I topped it off with new coolant. Is this possibly why the gauge didn't move? Or shoudl ti start warmer than 130? Whats the operating temp? Any ideas? Is the gauge broke? I didn't run it at any sharp angles so I don't know whats wrong.

I think most of the newer mechanical temp gauges use ether filled lines instead of the old copper sending wire method.

Also an amp meter shouldn't be much of a fire hazard as long as the wires are routed correctly, but looking at some pickups we've purchased I've come to notice that most of the P.O.'s wouldn't know correct routing of a wire if it hit them square in the face.

The line is ether filled. So, I guess that elminates the whole bending too much and broke the line somehwere.

So, was the motor just that cold? B/c I still would of thought the motor would of been over 130.

Thanks,

Kyle

I'm pretty sure I just put the same guages in that you're describing (el cheapo 3 guage pod from Wal-mart). And it takes a while of running before the temp guage gets any heat.

I'd say let it run longer, or take it out and drive it for a little while. 2 minutes isn't much time to let her warm up.

Alright, I'm going to drive her to school tomorow and see how it goes. Just didn't have time to let it run tonight b/c it took longer than expected b/c we went ahead and made a custom holder for it. I might get pics sometime. Its not finished so it may be a while. More concerned with making sure everyhting works good and there is no leaking from the the adapter.

I'll report back tomorrow.

Thanks,

Kyle

it should take about 5 minutes of idling to get to a temp you can read. normal running temp should be in the 180-200º range, depending on the thermostat type, and the outside air temp.

It works. I'll get pics up eventually. Thanks to all who helped. It was around 190 degrees. The oil pressure dropped down low but i know its fine.

Thanks again,

Kyle

where did you put the sending unit? if plain water came out and you had green antifreeze in the radiator, then you have blockage somewhere....when i tore my 460 down, i found out the back half of the engine had muddy brown water and the front had clean green antifreeze...the water jackets clogged up because i used too much radiator sealer in the past...so i found the reason my engine was running hot!! you might check it later after you put new antifreeze in by pulling the sending unit back out for a sec....

I put the sending unit in the block not the thermostat. I think the reason it was mainly water that came out because the truck has lead a hard life. Its switched owners numerous times. I'm guessing they always filled the radiator with water instead of buying some antifreeze. They were even too cheap to buy new fuses. So, instead they wrapped bad fuses with foil.

I will probably drain the radiator entirely in summer. Ater that, I may drain the sending unit and see if there is any blockage.

Thanks for the tip.

Kyle
