I'm moving shortly to a new city/state and am not the best map reader in the world. My team gave me a $500.00 gift card from Cabela's as a going away gift. They carry Lowrance, Garmin and Megellan.
Any experience with any of these?
I don't have to get one at Cabela's, but for the first time I can recall, there isn't really anything else I 'need' from there.
Any suggestions on where/how to mount one in an F-250?
I don't really need one with all the bells and whistles, I just need one that will get me to my destination.
In my wife's car, she has a built in system. When we got it I thought it was just a toy. It is a toy, but a fun toy that can help take stress away when you are unfamiliar areas. I got a portable unit for Christmas, a Garmin NUVI. It's removeable and can mount in several convenient locations. I use the suction cup and have it at the top of the windshield next to the mirror. That way it's out of my field of vision yet I can see it at a glance. The unit can run off batteries so my cord does not hang down to the outlet. The main unit pops out and fits into a case and is a little larger than a deck of cards. All the controls except the on/off is touch screen so you don't lose any screen size with borders of buttons. Yes, they do what they advertise. Maps, trips, voice guiding, and tons of restaurants, gas stations, and hotels.
Go down to Circuit City or an automotive stereo shop and play with one for a while.
I have the Garmin 2720 in my F-250. It is mounted on the dash just above my radio and it works great. Garmin offers free software downloads on thier website so you can always have the latest updates. Like Schmedly said go to Circuit City or Best Buy and mess around with one.
I use my notebook with a Rayming bluetooth GPS receiver - works great. I use it just about every day. I go to 3-6 stops a day and I like entering locations on a regular keyboard - much faster. Also, I can keep my day trips as files for reference.
Just something to think about...
Oh, I have a JottoDesk for the notebook - no holes to drill as it uses the passenger seat front bolts to attach.
I have a garmin 60cs and before that I had a garmin vista. Love them both, switched to the 60cs for the color screen and more memory. Just noticed they now have a 60csx which can use a mini sd card...grrr wish i had waited for this one.
I use it for finding new customer houses (just enter itn the address and away you go), and hunting. Also every christmas i drive to Florida. when driving to florida I sometimes hook it to a laptop so I have a bigger screen etc.
How do you like your jotto desk?? I have been seriously looking into them.
While it is a bit pricey, it really is nice. It is sturdy and swings from center to passenger side. It really does not take up much space (leg room). I would suggest getting the screen support as mine does bounce around a bit and it is wearing the hinges a little. I should order one myself...
I did cut a couple of inches off the post as I found it too high at its lowest position.
We use the Garmin 2610 and couldn't be happier. We went with the 2610 as it is a top of the line unit which does not, repeat not, have an internal drive. We use the unit in our truck, car, and on the motorcycle. Garmin does not recommend the micro-drive unit, such as the 2720, on a motorcycle. We do our routing on the desktop and transfer data to the 2610 via usb port vice trying to do routing on the unit itself. That would be too cumbersome in our opinion.
We're very pleased with this unit, its routing, and voice commands. Its easy to switch between vehicles.
You can pick up a refurbished 2610 pretty cheap these days.
Have the Magellan 700 which is updateable and have used it between Calgary and Sand Diego and surrounding areas. Easy to use and selling now in the 750 to 900 range.

Check out Microsoft Streets&Trips for your laptop.About 110.00 with the GPS unit that plugs in a usb port.I run the country in my business and it locates addresses great. It shows you restaurants, gas stations, atm's,campgrounds, etc.
someone on here said they got their hands on a factory ford 500 gps unit and installed it in their excursion and it works. go figure. nobody in the area even has the 500 units.
Jim,
Thanks. Actually I like that idea even better, since I use my laptop in my business...
Does the Rayming give you maps and turn by turn directions also?
The Rayming unit I have is bluetooth and has its own battery (8 hours). They do make a USB unit also. Both are only a receiver, so you need some software for your laptop. I use Route 66 with my Mac and it only has text directions - no speech, but does show a route map and my position. I think MS Streets & Maps (I think that's what it is) may have speech, if that's what you are looking for. Either way, software & laptop is more easy to update than some of the self contained units, which require loading sections of maps. Map programs are cheap.
If I find that my map doesn't have the address I'm looking for, I just get onto the Internet using my Bluetooth phone. Even Internet maps are not 100% current - sometimes I have to call my customer...
Glad I asked the question to begin with. I have a laptop, 99% of the time it is with me when on the road. MS Streets and Trips is $129.00 (vs several hundred for the self contained units) and has voice commands.
I like the idea of voice as it will allow me to keep a closer eye on the road.
