I just bought a 97 explorer. It was 4 hundred miles away so I brought a tow dolly with me and pulled the car back. well about 100 miles from home i noticed that when I let off the gas and pushed back on the gas it would rev up to about 3 1/2 to 4 grand then shift into gear. once it gets back into gear it pulls fine. I'm don't think the problem was there when I bought it but it could have been since must of the trip was all freeway and there was not much slowing down. when takeing off slow it seems to be fine. Does this sound like an easy fix or did I get screwed?
Most of the trip was freeway (70-75) I left the overdrive on once I got up to 60/65. there were not to many hills and when there was one i would let off the gas a little or keep the same pressure trying to keep it from dropping down into 3rd. Is this not the right way to pull a car or did I f the tranny up? Should have just left it 3rd and let the motor sit a 3 plus grand? I always thought that the overdrive button is just to keep the tranny from shifting up and down all the time. It was pulling in 4th. I could keep speed or even gain speed on small to med hills if needed with out dropping down. Thanks for any input
Raydar, I believe this is normal for a ford transmissioin. I had a 99 F150 that after I added dual exhaust I noticed the same thing. (I hadn't noticed it before) It was my understanding that it's the torque converter unlocking and then locking as you let off the accelerator at highway speeds (gas mileage). Next time you're out on the highway watch the tach as you decclerate and then accelerate. I will do the same thing.
I hope that is the case but to me it seems like it takes to long to get back into gear to be right. If it was only like a sec i could see but it takes longer.
