Transmission Removal

I have a 1988 Bronco II, 2.9L Engine, A4LD Automatic Transmission. I'm in the middle of replacing the rear engine seal and am to the point of removing the transmission. The bolts attaching the bell housing to the engine seem to be in an almost impossible position to remove. Can removal of the transmission support cross member allow the transmission to be lowered via a jack to create clearance to the bolts in question without doing damage to anything? If so, what's the best way to do this, if not, how the heck am I supposed to get to these silly things??

Also, how do I remove the transmission filler tube? Does it just pull out or is there a retaining mechanism for the thing?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

P.S. A friend told me about your site here today and I have great hopes I can find the answers to some perplexing problems I've had.

Welcome to FTE!!!

The Ford manual tells you to remove the support and jack up on the front of the engine to gain access to the top two bolts. I have read of other users getting there with extensions/etc, I'm sure you get some more ideas. You could also try searching our Ranger forum since they were very similar back then.

Is the FM146 any different? I removed those top two bolts in the bellhousing from the top of the engine, using a combination wrench. Kind of tedious, but it worked just fine.

Jacking the front of the engine makes more sense as it won't put tension on the bolts I'll be removing.

I'll have to look or that bolt holding the filler tube to the block. I think I'll have to clean a bit more of the oil off everything down there. Anybody have a particularly good degreaser for this sort of thing? I've tried lots of different types which all work to an extent but if there is something particularly good I'd like to hear about it.

Thanks for your suggestions and thanks for the welcome! I also have a 1984 F250 I occasionally have to work on and will most likely be needing help again.
