If I start my 2001 Mountaineer (5.0L V8) and drive away while it's still cold, the engine sounds really loud around 55 mph. If I let it warm up first, it's relatively quiet unless at some point I floor it, then it gets loud again.
I've checked for holes and there are none.
Yesterday, a new twist was added: now it sounds really loud taking off (very rumbly). Again, checked for holes and there are none. I put a heavy glove on and put my hand in front of the exhaust (not plugging it of course) it again gets quiet.
It gets cracks in the fex tube this use on this part. the new one doesnt have this type of flex tube. I think I paid 70 dollars for it. it is on the passenger side of engine
I had a Lincoln once that a piece of the catalytic converter broke off internally and was bouncing around inside the exhause system. It would periodically get lodged and the the noise would stop. It was a loud metallic rattling sound.
The catalytic converter problem was a loud metallic rattling sound. Spitting sound? Does it run smoothly aside from the noise? Is is running on all 8 cylinders?

Yep... discovered a crack in the muffler that gets bigger when the truck gets warm.
