bad smell

I have developed a very weird problem on my '93. when i fill up with gas, for about a ten foot radius around my drunk it reeks of gasoline. the weird part is, there is no leak. running, not running, nothing leaks at all. I put fresh carboard underneath the truck and there isn't one drip. after 6 hours, it is completely dry. the gas cap is fine. the smell almost seems like it is rising from between the bed and the cab, but i could be wrong. once i get down to about half a tank it no longer smells. heavy driving makes it smell worse than sitting. i am most definitely smelling gasoline, but i have no idea how or why, or what it means.

A few (and very, very few) people have had problems with the gooseneck between the tank and filler. Usually when there is a problem, they get gas spillage from the failed gooseneck due to filling it up real good. I suppose there is a remote chance that the seal between our gas tank and sending unit has failed.

Or maybe a small hole in the top of the tank, just big enough to let a little out but not enough to have it drip on the ground.
