I need to replace the cracked p/s pump on my 78 F150, 351m. It is the p/s pump with the 2inch wide filler neck and plastic cap. The bracket that attaches the p/s pump to the engine is cracking at the top rear bolt hole. My local junk yard has some 400 engines with the p/s pumps with smaller necks with built in dipstick/caps. The bracket on those looks slightly different. My question is will a 400 p/s pump bracket fit a 351m with no modifications needed? I'd sure like to hear from someone whom has replaced their p/s pump bracket.
If it were me and I was not too concerned about appearance because the truck is a restored show piece, I would get a piece of steel plate just a little thicker than the bracket and weld it to the outside (away from the mounting surface) of the bracket. I would cut the plate so it overhangs approx 1/4" all the way around except at the bottom (opposite end of the bolt hole)where I would have it at least 1" longer providing there is enough room. Then I would center the piece over the damaged area and wire or stick weld it frm the back side. Then using the bolt hole as a guide, drill the proper size hole. Several small welds may work better than one solid weld because you may not want to get the original bracket too hot. Not being able to visualize your bracket I have not taken into account any other brackets mounted behind or outside the bracket. If there are other items mounted to the same bracket hole you will want to make sure the above fix will not cause allignment problems. Hope this helps.....Pat
